1700 years ago the Emperor Constantine gathered all the sects of Christianity together and their various interpretations of the Gospels and consolidated them into one Book. He then worked with the Bishops of the Catholic Church to make them the leading authority over the Scriptures.
This is why as much as modern Christians protest about being connected to the Catholic Church, they are literally taking their interpretations from a Roman Emperor and the Catholic Bishops in power at the time. This Emperor was not known to be especially religious or spiritual he wasn't even Christian his motivation for bringing all the Sects of Christianity together was a political strategy to sure up his continued power.
And how were the Books that went into the Bible decided on? Constantine and the church leaders did not work through the Holy Spirit or God to decide on the Gospels that were included in the Bible they merely voted on them.
Once they decided on what Gospels would be included in the Bible they then agreed upon the Canon they would be interpreted with. Any church leaders who would not agree to the Canon were soon dealt with and under threat of death were brought to heel. The Gospels that never made it into the Bible were said to be destroyed but we all know where they really are.
There are a lot of protests by other modern Christians who rail against the thought that Constantine worked with the Catholic Church to make them the Biblical authority and they try to muddy this truth. They state that Constantine never made Catholicism the state religion, nor did he found Catholicism, this is correct he did much worse than that. He gave the Catholic Church the power to determine how the Scriptures were interpreted removed God the Father as the Godhead and replaced Him with Jesus insisting that the son was equal to God the Father and should be worshipped as God. Once Constantine did that he didn't need to make them the visible authority over the Bible, they just worked from the shadows like they still do now.
